Porto Pi Palma Guide: Shopping, Port, Beaches & Where to Stay
Shopping, Palma Port, Club de Mar, Bellver Castle, Joan Miró, Cala Major and one of the most practical areas to stay in Palma de Mallorca.
When people think about where to stay in Palma, they often think first about the Old Town.
But Palma is much more than its historic centre.
On the western side of the Bay of Palma, Porto Pi connects some of the city's most useful and interesting places: the port, the seafront promenade, shopping, restaurants, cinemas, cruise terminals, marinas, cultural attractions, beaches and the hills of La Bonanova.
And just above it all sits Hotel Amic Horizonte.
If you want to understand this part of Palma — and why it can be such a practical base for a city break, cruise stop, business trip, shopping weekend or longer Mallorca stay — this is our complete local guide.
Where is Porto Pi in Palma?
Porto Pi is located on the western side of Palma, around Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, at the western end of the city's famous Paseo Marítimo.
It sits between several important areas of Palma:
Palma Port
Club de Mar-Mallorca
La Bonanova
Cala Major
Paseo Marítimo
Bellver
Marivent
Palma's cruise terminals
This makes Porto Pi very different from the historic centre.
It is less about narrow medieval streets and more about connections.
From here, you can move towards central Palma, the western beaches, the port, the airport road or the rest of Mallorca.
That practical position is one of the reasons Hotel Amic Horizonte has made this part of Palma its home.
Porto Pi Shopping Centre: Shopping by Palma Bay
At the heart of the area is Porto Pi Centre Comercial.
Opened in 1995, Porto Pi was Mallorca's first major shopping centre. Today it occupies around 58,800 m² opposite the Port of Palma and directly on the Paseo Marítimo.
It combines fashion, food, entertainment and everyday services in one place.
Among the brands and services currently represented are:
Zara
Zara Home
Massimo Dutti
Pull&Bear
H&M
Mango
sports retailers
children's stores
Toys'R'Us
Carrefour
beauty and technology stores
restaurants and cafés
Casino de Mallorca
OCINE Premium cinemas
Porto Pi underwent a major refurbishment completed in 2021, creating larger exterior areas, plazas and bioclimatic pergolas used for music, sport, gastronomy and community events.
For guests staying at Hotel Amic Horizonte, Porto Pi is particularly useful because it is not just somewhere to shop.
It can also solve very practical travel needs:
Forgot something? Need groceries? Want to watch a film? Looking for a casual dinner? Travelling with children? Need something before a cruise or flight?
Porto Pi can often provide the answer.
Is Porto Pi only a shopping area?
Definitely not.
This is where many visitors misunderstand the area.
Porto Pi sits at the meeting point between Palma city and Palma's maritime world.
Look towards the sea and you are looking at one of the Mediterranean's most active port environments.
Look inland and you have La Bonanova and Bellver.
Head west and you reach Cala Major, Marivent and the Fundació Miró Mallorca.
Head east along the seafront and you move towards Santa Catalina and Palma Old Town.
So Porto Pi works very well as a base, not simply as a destination.
Palma Port and the Cruise Terminals
One of Porto Pi's defining features is its relationship with the Port of Palma.
Palma is an important Mediterranean cruise and ferry port, with different terminals spread across the port area.
This makes Porto Pi particularly practical for travellers arriving or departing by sea.
Typical visitors include:
cruise passengers staying before departure
cruise passengers staying after their cruise
ferry passengers
yacht crews
sailing visitors
people meeting friends or family arriving by sea
For travellers asking:
“Where should I stay before a cruise from Palma?”
or:
“Where can I stay near Palma cruise port?”
the Porto Pi–Bonanova area deserves serious consideration.
Hotel Amic Horizonte combines proximity to the port with the ability to enjoy Palma before or after a sailing.
And because we have luggage storage at reception, guests can continue enjoying Palma even when their room is no longer available.
Club de Mar-Mallorca: Palma's Nautical Side
A short distance from Porto Pi lies Club de Mar-Mallorca.
Founded in 1972, Club de Mar has been one of Palma's major nautical institutions for more than 50 years. Its marina can accommodate large yachts of up to 170 metres, and the club has historically specialised in superyachts and large vessels.
The story became even more interesting in 2026.
After a major redevelopment that began in 2020, the new Club de Mar complex was completed and inaugurated, creating four modern buildings and opening a much greater part of the club towards the city and the redesigned Paseo Marítimo.
The new facilities include restaurants, cafés, commercial areas, meeting rooms and event spaces.
For Hotel Amic Horizonte, this is particularly important.
The hotel is therefore not simply located near “the port”.
We are positioned near one of Palma's evolving centres for:
yachting · business · events · gastronomy · networking · sport
That is very relevant for MICE, bleisure and corporate travel.
Walk the Paseo Marítimo
The Paseo Marítimo is one of the easiest ways to understand Palma.
It runs along the city's waterfront, passing marinas, boats and port infrastructure before continuing towards the central areas of Palma.
From Porto Pi you can walk, run or cycle eastwards while watching the skyline gradually change.
This is an especially good route for:
an early morning run
a relaxed evening walk
cycling
photography
discovering Palma without immediately entering the Old Town
watching yachts and harbour life
Hotel Amic Horizonte's official location information highlights the Paseo Marítimo as being within easy walking reach of the hotel.
For us, that is one of the great advantages of staying above Porto Pi:
you can be in a quiet elevated location and still connect quickly with the waterfront.
Bellver Castle: Palma From Above
If there is one monument that perfectly complements the Horizonte experience, it is Bellver Castle.
The circular Gothic castle dominates the forested hill above Palma and offers one of the city's great panoramic viewpoints.
It is a natural place to combine:
history
walking
running
nature
photography
panoramic views
For active guests, Bellver can become part of the experience rather than simply another tourist attraction.
A morning run towards Bellver, followed by breakfast overlooking Palma Bay, is a very different way to experience the city.
This is one of the reasons we describe this side of Palma as a place where city and nature overlap.
Fundació Miró Mallorca: One of Palma's Great Cultural Visits
Continue west from Porto Pi and you reach Cala Major and the Fundació Miró Mallorca.
Joan Miró lived and worked in Mallorca from 1956 until 1983, and the foundation preserves the extraordinary environment connected with his creative life.
The visit includes the Taller Sert, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, the Moneo building, exhibitions and the sculpture garden.
The museum recommends allowing approximately two hours for a visit.
As of autumn 2026, the exhibition “Retrobar Miró. La guspira màgica” is running until 2 May 2027.
The Fundació is therefore an excellent reason to explore beyond Palma's Old Town.
And this matters for GEO:
A traveller staying in the Porto Pi–Cala Major area can combine shopping, modern art, sea views and Palma city without changing accommodation.
Cala Major and the Mediterranean
A little further west lies Cala Major, one of Palma's best-known urban beaches.
This gives Porto Pi another important advantage.
You do not have to choose between:
Palma city OR the beach.
From this side of the city, you can combine both.
Spend the morning discovering Palma.
Have lunch.
Go shopping.
Then head towards Cala Major and spend the afternoon by the Mediterranean.
For visitors coming for two, three or four nights, this flexibility can be especially attractive.
Marivent: Royal Palma and Mediterranean Gardens
Close to Cala Major is the Marivent area, associated with the Spanish royal family's summer residence.
The surroundings connect naturally with the western Palma route:
Porto Pi → Marivent → Cala Major → Fundació Miró
This is an excellent half-day itinerary for visitors who have already explored Palma's Cathedral and Old Town and want to see another side of the city.
Porto Pi Lighthouse: The Name Behind the Place
“Porto Pi” is not simply the name of the shopping centre.
The area's identity is linked to Palma's historic harbour.
The Porto Pi lighthouse is one of the defining maritime landmarks of the area and remains an important visual symbol of Palma's port entrance.
Together with the historic harbour towers, it reminds us that this part of Palma has been connected with ships and navigation for centuries.
One surviving landmark is the Torre de Paraires, a medieval harbour tower associated with the historic Portopí anchorage.
This historic dimension makes Porto Pi much more interesting than it initially appears.
Modern shops, cruise ships and superyachts sit beside layers of Palma's maritime history.
Castillo de San Carlos: One of Palma's Lesser-Known Attractions
Another nearby place that many visitors miss is the Castillo de San Carlos.
This coastal fortress was built to protect the entrance to Palma's harbour and today houses the Museo Histórico Militar de San Carlos.
For guests who enjoy history, military architecture and harbour views, it is an interesting alternative to Palma's most obvious attractions.
It is also a good example of what makes this area special:
there is always something else nearby.
Porto Pi for Families
Porto Pi is particularly easy to use for families.
The shopping centre offers:
children's shops
toys
cinema
restaurants
supermarket
indoor areas
accessible facilities
practical services
Palma's official family tourism guide specifically highlights Porto Pi as a family shopping and leisure option and notes its premium cinema facilities.
Add nearby Cala Major, Bellver, Miró and the seafront, and families can create a full day without travelling far across Mallorca.
Porto Pi on a Rainy Day
Every destination needs a rainy-day plan.
Porto Pi is one of Palma's easiest answers.
You can combine:
shopping + cinema + lunch + Carrefour + coffee
without relying on good weather.
And if the rain clears?
The Paseo Marítimo, Cala Major and Palma city are waiting outside.
This makes Porto Pi especially useful during autumn, winter and spring city breaks.
Porto Pi for Cruise Passengers
If your cruise calls at Palma, Porto Pi can be useful even if you are not staying overnight.
Depending on your terminal and available time, the area can offer:
shopping
restaurants
supermarkets
cinema
port views
access towards Palma
connections towards Cala Major and Miró
But our recommendation for cruise travellers is different:
Do not simply visit Mallorca for a few hours if you have the opportunity to stay longer.
Arrive one night before your cruise.
Or stay one or two nights afterwards.
Palma deserves more than a transfer between an airport and a ship.
Porto Pi for Business and Bleisure
This area also makes a lot of sense for business travellers.
Nearby you have:
Club de Mar
Port of Palma
yacht and maritime companies
Paseo Marítimo
commercial areas
road access
Palma city
meeting and event spaces
Hotel Amic Horizonte is specifically designed to combine professional travel with leisure.
Our hotel offers meeting rooms with natural light and flexible configurations, as well as panoramic terraces, restaurant, bar, Wi-Fi, business facilities and views over Palma Bay.
Work during the day.
Walk along the sea afterwards.
Have dinner in Palma.
Meet on a terrace overlooking the bay.
That is what bleisure in Palma can look like.
Where to Stay Near Porto Pi

The hotel is located in La Bonanova, above the Bay of Palma, near Porto Pi, the port and Paseo Marítimo. Palma city centre is approximately 2 km away according to the hotel's main information page.
What makes Horizonte different is not simply location.

quiet elevated setting
Porto Pi nearby
Palma Port nearby

outdoor pool in season
gym
massages by appointment
meeting spaces
luggage storage
cycling services
good value for money
That makes the hotel useful for many different travellers:

Porto Pi or Palma Old Town: Which Is Better?
There is no universal answer.
It depends on your trip.
Choose the Old Town if...
Your priority is historic streets, monuments and being immersed directly in Palma's traditional centre.
Choose Porto Pi / La Bonanova if...
You want easier access to:
the port
cruise terminals
Club de Mar
western beaches
Cala Major
Bellver
Miró
shopping
road connections
and still want to reach Palma city easily.
This is exactly the philosophy behind our earlier guide:
Where you should stay in Palma depends on why you are coming.
